Losing employer coverage does not automatically point to one best replacement. COBRA, an individual plan, coverage through a spouse, or another available route may each have different tradeoffs.

Confirm the exact end date

Ask when your current coverage ends and whether it runs through your last day, the end of the month, or another date. Knowing the date helps you work backward and avoid an unintended gap.

List the paths available to you

Your possible paths may include continuing the same group plan through COBRA, joining a spouse’s plan, enrolling in individual coverage, or moving to new employer coverage. Availability and enrollment windows vary, so confirm rather than assume.

Compare continuity with total cost

COBRA may preserve the plan and network you already know, which can matter during ongoing treatment. Other coverage may differ in premium, network, deductible, prescriptions, and effective date. Compare all of those together.

Before canceling anything: Have the replacement coverage and effective date confirmed in writing.

Prepare these details

  • The last day of your employer coverage
  • Your COBRA notice and full monthly premium
  • Current doctors, prescriptions, and ongoing care
  • Who needs coverage and for how long
  • The date any new employer coverage begins
